What the theory exam is like: how many questions, how many mistakes

The exam is taken on a computer and has two parts. You have to pass both on the same day.

Part one: the psychological test

Three questions. You only move on to the knowledge test if you answer all three correctly. No mistakes are allowed here.

Part two: the knowledge test

20 questions, each with one correct answer. You get 30 minutes. You pass when at least 18 answers are correct, which means a maximum of 2 mistakes.

The 20 questions break down like this:

Questions are drawn at random from the Ministry of Internal Affairs database. The database is published on the ministry's website, and new questions only come into use 30 days after publication, so nothing catches you by surprise.

You can take the exam in Armenian, Russian, English, Persian or Arabic — your choice. Progress is shown on a screen in the waiting area, and at the end the results are shown to you directly.

If there is a technical failure during the exam, the exam is stopped, a report is drawn up, and the retake is scheduled within 5 working days.

What if I fail

• After the first failure: no sooner than 7 days later.
• After the second and any later failure: no sooner than 1 month later.
• These waiting periods can be shortened by paying for an out-of-turn exam: after a first failure, 45,000 drams for the next day or 30,000 drams for the third day. After a second or later failure, 45,000 drams for the 7th day or 30,000 drams for the 14th.

How long the result stays valid

Once you pass the theory, you have two years to pass the practical exam. If you do not manage it in that time, the theory result lapses and you have to take it again.

📌 The FAQ section on roadpolice.am still says "one year". That is out of date: under the amendment in force since 4 July 2026 the period is two years.

From 1 September 2026, questions will be drawn only from the categories you applied for.

Quick answers

How many questions are there? 3 psychological and 20 knowledge questions.

How many mistakes are allowed? At most 2 in the knowledge test. None in the psychological one.

How much time do I get? 30 minutes.
